Colonial Park Cemetery

Colonial Park Cemetery features a high brick wall running along Abercorn Street that separates the quiet, moss-draped grounds from the city bustle. Established in seventeen fifty, this was Savannah’s primary public burial ground for over a century. During the Civil War, occupying Union soldiers camped among these headstones. They reportedly took pleasure in rearranging the inscriptions on several grave markers to mock the deceased, leaving behind a collection of deliberately altered tombstones that still puzzle visitors and historians who try to decipher the original names today.
