The Waving Girl statue stands on the edge of the Savannah River, depicting a woman holding a handkerchief aloft. This is Florence Martus. For forty-four years, she lived at the Cockspur Island lighthouse and signaled every ship that passed by waving a cloth during the day and a lantern at night. Sailors famously scanned the shoreline for her greeting, eventually making her a local legend. She claimed she waited for a lover who never returned, but no record confirms if he ever existed.
