Flannery O'Connor Childhood Home Museum

The brick row house on East Charlton Street wears a small, elegant wrought-iron balcony and a heavy, dark green door. This is where Mary Flannery O'Connor spent her first thirteen years, playing in the courtyard with her pet chickens. When she was five, she taught one of those chickens to walk backward, a feat that earned her a spot on a Pathé newsreel. She later called that moment the only thing of importance she ever did in Savannah before moving away to Milledgeville.
