Monterey Square

Monterey Square centers on a bronze statue of Casimir Pulaski, the Polish nobleman who died fighting for the American cause at the Siege of Savannah in seventeen seventy-nine. While most squares in the city honor founders or generals, this one serves as a memorial to a foreign volunteer struck by grapeshot while charging on horseback. His remains were buried in a secret grave for decades, lost until archaeologists uncovered a metal box beneath the ground nearby in nineteen ninety-six.
