Utah State Capitol

The Utah State Capitol sits high on Arsenal Hill, its neoclassical dome clad in copper that has weathered to a soft, sea-foam green. When the building opened in nineteen sixteen, the architect Richard Kletting insisted on using Utah granite for the foundation and Little Cottonwood Canyon quartz monzonite for the exterior. He fought the state commission for months over the cost, finally threatening to walk away from the project entirely unless they allowed him to build with the stone he knew would last.
