The Social Hall Historical Marker

The Social Hall stands as a sunken foundation protected by a glass roof on the sidewalk near State Street. When the pioneers built it in eighteen fifty-two, it served as the community theater, dance hall, and meeting house. During the eighteen sixties, the actor Maude Adams performed her first roles on its stage before achieving fame on Broadway. Workers unearthed the foundation during a nineteen ninety-one excavation, uncovering remnants of the original adobe walls and the early infrastructure of the city.
