State of Utah Council Hall

The Council Hall features a distinctive limestone facade and a high, wooden cupola that once sat atop the original territorial capitol in Fillmore. When the seat of government moved to Salt Lake City in eighteen sixty-six, the city built this hall to house the legislative assembly. It served as the meeting place for the territorial legislature until eighteen ninety-four. During those years, lawmakers debated statehood inside these walls while facing intense scrutiny from federal officials who occupied the building next door.
