Eagle Gate Monument

The Eagle Gate monument features a massive bronze eagle with a wingspan of twenty feet, perched atop a wide arch spanning the street. Brigham Young commissioned the original wooden version in eighteen fifty-nine to serve as the entrance to his private estate, which reached up the hillside. The eagle’s talons clutch a beehive, a symbol of industry for the early pioneers. Workers replaced the original timber carving with this cast bronze eagle in eighteen ninety-one to better withstand the mountain winters.
