The Ave Maria mural covers the entire side of a brick building with a sprawling, vibrant depiction of the Virgin Mary surrounded by local desert flora and desert saints. It was painted by artist Jann Haworth, who is best known for co-designing the Beatles' Sergeant Pepper album cover. Haworth organized the project with neighborhood residents, who helped tile the surface with small, individually painted clay squares. The work remains a collection of hundreds of separate, hand-crafted expressions integrated into one giant portrait.
