The Gallivan Center features a sprawling outdoor plaza that transforms from an ice skating rink in the winter to an amphitheater for concerts during the summer. John Gallivan, a former publisher of the Salt Lake Tribune, envisioned this space as a downtown living room to draw people back to the city center during the nineteen nineties. Before this construction, the block held a collection of aging, low-occupancy buildings. Gallivan spent years lobbying city officials to replace them with this public gathering ground.
