Alta Club

The Alta Club stands out with its heavy, rusticated sandstone walls and an arched entryway that looks like it belongs in a different century. Established in eighteen eighty-three, it began as a private sanctuary for the mining titans and businessmen who built Salt Lake City. When the club opened, women were prohibited from entering through the front door. They had to use a side entrance until the rules finally changed in nineteen eighty-seven, after nearly a century of debate among the membership.
