The Exchange Place historic district is anchored by the Salt Lake Stock and Mining Exchange Building. It features a distinct neoclassical facade of white terra cotta and pressed brick, patterned after the style of early twentieth century financial hubs. Before this area solidified into a business center, it was a quiet residential block. In nineteen oh eight, the mining magnate Samuel Newhouse commissioned the building to house the stock exchange, hoping to center the region's vast mining wealth on this single street.
