Walther Park sits on the site of the former Hotel Europa, a structure that hosted everyone from royalty to state officials during the twentieth century. Today, the park features a glass-fronted office and retail complex designed by David Chipperfield Architects. The project faced intense debate among residents regarding the scale of the new buildings and the loss of the older, grander hotel silhouette. It currently serves as a modern commercial node that connects the city train station to the historic center.
