The Church of Our Saviour features a corkscrew spire that coils upward to a golden globe topped by a statue of Christ. King Christian the fifth commissioned this design in the seventeenth century to give his new naval district a skyline anchor. The architect Lambert van Haven drew the inspiration for the twisted spire from a trip to Rome, where he saw a similar shape on a church dome. It rose over Copenhagen before the rest of the neighborhood even had its permanent houses.
