The Academy Garden features a massive, weathered stone retaining wall topped by a row of dense, neatly clipped hedges that separate the quiet paths from the busy city streets beyond. It takes its name from the Karlsschule, an elite military academy that once stood here. In the seventeen eighties, the poet Friedrich Schiller attended this school as a reluctant student. He spent his days in strict military drills, often smuggling forbidden books into the garden to read in secret while he daydreamed of poetry.
