Staatsgalerie Stuttgart

The Staatsgalerie Stuttgart wears two faces. One is a nineteenth-century neoclassical structure, a stone block of traditional museum architecture. The other is a neon-bright, postmodern extension designed by James Stirling in the nineteen eighties. It features vibrant pink railings, bright blue window frames, and a winding outdoor path that cuts through the building itself. When it opened, the shocking contrast between the heavy stone past and the playful, colorful addition divided the city, and people lined up simply to argue about it.
