Markthalle Stuttgart

The Markthalle in Stuttgart features a distinct Art Nouveau facade of yellow sandstone that breaks from the surrounding postwar architecture. Inside, merchants occupy the airy, iron-framed halls selling everything from local Maultaschen to imported saffron. The building rose in nineteen fourteen to consolidate the city's chaotic street markets under one roof. During the final months of the Second World War, a direct bomb hit destroyed the northern wing, leaving the traders to carry on amidst the rubble until the city completed the reconstruction in nineteen fifty-three.
