The Altes Schloss, or Old Castle, features a courtyard surrounded by arcaded galleries and steep, tiled gables that mark it as a classic Renaissance residence. Originally a moated fortress from the tenth century, it transformed into a ducal palace under Count Ulrich. In fifteen fifty-three, Duke Christopher ordered the construction of the sophisticated inner courtyard you see today. When the royal family moved to the New Palace nearby in the eighteenth century, the old structure became a residence for court officials and artists.
