Schillerplatz

The bronze statue of Friedrich Schiller stands in the center of the square, surrounded by the Altes Schloss and the Stiftskirche. King Ludwig the First of Bavaria commissioned this monument in eighteen thirty-nine, the first of its kind in Germany. While the square bears the name of the famous poet, local protesters once draped the statue in mourning clothes to protest political censorship. Today, the square remains a common ground where the city’s history of literature and its turbulent political past collide.
