Schillerdenkmal

monument

The bronze figure of Friedrich Schiller stands on a pedestal in the middle of the Karlsplatz. Sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen designed this statue in eighteen thirty-nine, making it the first monument in Germany dedicated to a poet rather than a prince or a general. When the unveiling ceremony took place, the crowd was so dense that officials had to clear space just to get the covering off. It remains the anchor of this square, surrounded by the city's history.
