Hoppenlau Cemetery

The Hoppenlau Cemetery is marked by rows of crumbling sandstone markers pressed tightly together behind a high, weathered wall. Established in the mid sixteenth century, it served as Stuttgart’s main burial ground for over three hundred years. When a cholera epidemic struck in eighteen thirty-one, the space ran out of room, forcing the city to open new graveyards. Astronomer Johann Gottlieb Friedrich von Bohnenberger and poet Wilhelm Hauff lie here among the townspeople who lived through the city's transformation from a royal residence to an industrial hub.
