Karlsplatz

Karlsplatz sits as a modest cobblestone square surrounded by the dense urban fabric of Stuttgart. It holds the statue of Emperor Wilhelm the First, cast in bronze and mounted on a high stone pedestal. During the second world war, the heavy bombs that flattened the neighboring Old Castle damaged the square, but the statue survived the destruction. Before the war, this open space served as the city's lively vegetable market, where farmers brought their goods into the center of the town every morning.
