Innere Ludwigsbrücke

The Innere Ludwigsbrücke features a series of prominent, wide stone arches that carry traffic over the Isar river toward the city center. Construction finished in eighteen twenty-eight, commissioned by King Ludwig the First to replace older, wooden crossings that frequently washed away during spring floods. Engineer Leo von Klenze designed the structure to withstand the brutal force of the alpine water. During the nineteen forty-five retreat, soldiers wired the bridge with explosives, but a local resident successfully cut the lines, saving the masonry.
