The Uerige brewery is marked by a cluster of heavy, dark wooden shutters and the constant crowd gathered on the cobblestones outside. For over a hundred and sixty years, this spot has specialized in Altbier, a traditional top-fermented beer native to Düsseldorf. Wilhelm Cürten purchased the property in eighteen sixty-two, and he famously insisted that guests who did not like his beer should leave immediately. His gruff reputation survives in the name Uerige, a local dialect word for a grumpy person.
