The church of Saint Maximilian features a facade of pale, unfinished brick that rises abruptly from the pavement, contrasting sharply with the intricate, dark stone carvings common to its neighbors. Built in the seventeen hundreds for the Franciscan order, the building served as a monastery church where monks lived and prayed in silence. Today, the space remains quiet, housing the remains of Jan Wellem, the Elector who transformed Düsseldorf into a center for the arts, buried directly beneath the church altar.
