The yellow stucco house at the corner of Shim'on Rokah Street stands out for its high, arched windows and the heavy, ornate door that separates the sidewalk from the garden. Shim'on Rokah built this home in eighteen eighty-seven, becoming the first resident to live outside the walls of the old port city of Jaffa. He wanted to prove that families could live safely in the open fields. He kept a loaded rifle by his bed for years, just in case.
