Podmurze is a narrow, quiet street tucked right against the thick, red brick line of the medieval city wall. Its name literally translates to under-the-wall, and it holds a row of houses pressed so tightly against the fortifications that some residents once used the ancient wall as a structural backing for their own hearths. In the mid-seventeen hundreds, a city guard stood watch from a wooden gallery directly above these rooftops, checking that no fire spread from the tight chimneys below.
