The exterior of Stereo features a distinct, boxy industrial facade of gray stone that feels at odds with the elegant, terraced Victorian townhouses surrounding it on Renfield Lane. This building was designed by the architect Alexander "Greek" Thomson in the eighteen sixties, originally functioning as a warehouse for tea and coffee merchants. It remains a cramped, subterranean venue today, known for its heavy concrete pillars and the fact that its stage sits directly beneath the heavy, rattling traffic of the street above.
