The Marshall House features a brick facade with a row of wrought iron balconies overlooking Broughton Street. Mary Marshall, a formidable businesswoman, opened these doors as a hotel in eighteen fifty-one. During the Civil War, the building operated as a hospital for Union soldiers, and surgeons reportedly buried amputated limbs in the courtyard to avoid long trips to the cemetery. Today, the floors still creak under the weight of those years, and the building holds onto the reputation of hosting restless guests.
