Four iron cannons sit embedded muzzle-down in the earth at the corner of Bull and Liberty Streets. These pieces of artillery date back to the late eighteenth century and once served the local militia. They mark the site where the old city wall met the town entrance, acting as sturdy, permanent bollards to prevent carriages from clipping the corners of the sidewalk. A plaque marks their history, but they remain silent sentinels of a city defense that disappeared long ago.
