The Alte Kanzlei stands out with its intricate, late Renaissance facade of carved sandstone and steep, gabled roof. Built in the late sixteenth century, it served as the office for the ducal administration of Württemberg. During the Second World War, firebombs gutted the interior, leaving only the outer shell standing against the ruins of the city. While the neighborhood around it was modernized, crews rebuilt the exterior using stones salvaged from the wreckage, keeping the original seventeenth-century craftsmanship intact.
