Muffathalle

The Muffathalle sits right on the bank of the Isar River, identifiable by its industrial red brick facade and the tall, smokestack-like tower that rises above the roofline. Originally built as a power plant in eighteen ninety-four, it provided electricity to the city’s growing tram system. When the turbines stopped running in the nineteen seventies, the building faced demolition. Instead, the city turned it into a cultural center, leaving the massive steel pillars and high vaulted ceilings intact for concerts and art.
