The Ehekarussell, or Marriage Merry-Go-Round, features six bronze tableaus that encircle a fountain in a grim, theatrical dance through married life. Sculptor Jürgen Weber designed the scenes based on a poem by Hans Sachs, depicting everything from the initial spark of romance to the finality of death. When the figures were installed in nineteen eighty-four, the gruesome caricatures of partners bickering and struggling outraged local residents. They demanded the removal of what they considered a grotesque and offensive public monument.
