Pellerhaus

The Pellerhaus features a facade reconstructed from red sandstone, covered in intricate, swirling carvings that look like lace turned to stone. Martin Peller, a wealthy merchant from the seventeenth century, commissioned the house to show off his success. During the Second World War, Allied bombs gutted the building, leaving only the ground floor and the courtyard standing. Architects spent years piecing the fragments of the original stone back together, eventually reattaching them to a modern concrete frame that holds the past.
