Maxbrücke

The Maxbrücke is the oldest stone bridge in Nuremberg, built from sandstone blocks in fourteen fifty-seven to replace a timber structure. It spans the Pegnitz River with a wide, arched profile that carries the weight of centuries. During the seventeenth century, city officials installed a wooden walkway called the Hangende Brücke beneath its arches to keep people from falling into the water during heavy floods. Today, the bridge connects the street levels while the river flows steadily beneath its heavy masonry foundation.
