The Heilig-Geist-Spital in Nuremberg creates a distinct silhouette with its half-timbered gables and the bridge arches that span directly over the Pegnitz River. Founded in thirteen thirty-nine by a wealthy merchant named Konrad Gross, this building originally served as a sanctuary for the elderly and sick. It functioned as the most important charitable institution in the city for centuries. During the late nineteen thirties, the hospital held the Imperial Regalia of the Holy Roman Empire, hidden away to keep them secure.
