Tugendbrunnen

The Tugendbrunnen, or Virtue Fountain, stands in the square with six figures of women pouring water from their breasts into the basin below. Cast in bronze in fifteen eighty-nine, it reflects the city council's desire to broadcast moral standards during the Renaissance. Sculptor Benedict Wurzelbauer designed these women to represent virtues like temperance and justice. When the fountain was first installed, some residents complained about the nudity of the figures, prompting the city to keep the water flowing regardless of the public grumbling.
