St. Sebald - Sebalduskirche Nürnberg

The twin spires of the Saint Sebald Church reach toward the Nuremberg sky with a jagged, weathered profile that dwarfs the surrounding medieval rooftops. This structure began as a Romanesque basilica in the thirteenth century, built to house the relics of the city’s patron saint, Saint Sebaldus. During the Second World War, incendiary bombs gutted the interior, leaving only the stone shell standing. Workers sifted through the rubble afterward, painstakingly reassembling the shattered remains of the high altar and the saint’s elaborate bronze tomb.
