St. Lorenz

The St. Lorenz Church dominates the skyline with two massive, uneven sandstone towers and a circular rose window nearly thirty feet wide. This Gothic hall church rose during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries as a statement of Nuremberg’s growing wealth. During the Second World War, aerial bombardments shattered its vaulted ceilings and destroyed much of the interior. When volunteers began the reconstruction, they meticulously numbered and reassembled the fallen stone fragments, eventually restoring the structure to its medieval form by nineteen fifty-two.
