Historischer Kunstbunker

The Historischer Kunstbunker sits behind a nondescript, heavy door built directly into the sandstone rock of Nuremberg’s castle hill. This subterranean labyrinth began as a series of medieval beer cellars, carved deep into the cliffside over centuries. During the second world war, the city turned these damp, climate-controlled tunnels into a high-security vault. Art historians moved masterpieces like the Veit Stoss wood carvings down here, shielding them from the firebombing raids that eventually leveled almost every building in the Altstadt above.
