Henkersteg

The Henkersteg is a wooden covered bridge connecting the island in the Pegnitz River to the city wall. It carries a heavy, shingled roof that gives it a distinct silhouette against the water. This bridge provided a private entrance for the city executioner, who lived in the tower just across the span. Nuremberg citizens once avoided contact with the man, so he used this enclosed path to reach his duties in the city without crossing paths with the public on the main streets.
