Mautkeller

The Mautkeller sits beneath the massive sandstone arches of the former customs house, near the pegnitz river. Its heavy stone vaults date back to the early sixteenth century when Nuremberg functioned as a central trading hub for Europe. Merchants arriving with goods paid their duties at the offices above, then descended into these cellars to store their wares. Today, the space houses a restaurant, but the thick walls still hold the weight and chill of centuries of city commerce.
