The Imperial Castle of Nuremberg sits atop a sandstone ridge, dominated by the massive, timber-framed Sinwell Tower and its double-chapel. For centuries, every Holy Roman Emperor lived here for at least part of his reign. Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa expanded the complex in the twelfth century, making it his favored seat of power. He kept the imperial regalia, including the crown jewels, within the castle walls, ensuring that the heart of his empire stayed inside this fortification for generations.
