Kettensteg

The Kettensteg is a delicate iron suspension bridge hanging by chains across the Pegnitz River. It stands out because its rusted, skeletal frame looks almost too fragile to hold the weight of people crossing it. Built in eighteen twenty-three, it is the oldest iron suspension bridge on the European continent. Its engineer, Conradin Walther, faced a local city council that insisted the bridge be cheap and quick to assemble. Walther finished the entire project in less than four months.
