Fleischbrücke

The Fleischbrücke carries a single, sweeping arch of sandstone over the Pegnitz River, connecting the two halves of Nuremberg’s old city. Built in fifteen ninety-eight, this bridge replaced a wooden structure that collapsed during a flood. Master builder Peter Karl held the stones in place without a central support pillar. During the Second World War, as the city crumbled around it, the Fleischbrücke remained standing. It is the only major bridge in Nuremberg to survive that firestorm completely intact.
