The bronze figure of Albrecht Dürer stands on a stone pedestal with his gaze fixed toward the nearby castle. Sculptor Christian Daniel Rauch cast the statue in eighteen forty, making it the first monument in Germany dedicated to a painter. During the intense bombing of Nuremberg in nineteen forty-five, the statue survived largely intact, though the surrounding square lay in ruins. The metal man remained standing while the city rebuilt itself around his feet, watching the centuries pass from his fixed position.
