Der Hase von Jürgen Goertz

The massive, mangled bronze rabbit bursting from the pavement outside the Albrecht Durer House draws a crowd of confused onlookers every day. Sculptor Jurgen Goertz created this creature in nineteen eighty-four as a commentary on Durer’s famous watercolor of a hare. While Durer painted a delicate, realistic animal, Goertz built a skeletal, hollow nightmare. It hides human figures inside its own disjointed limbs, a permanent tribute to the artistic dialogue between historical reverence and the jarring, grotesque realities of the modern age.
