Hallerwiese

The Hallerwiese is a long, tree-lined promenade running alongside the western bank of the Pegnitz River, defined by a distinct, straight row of chestnut trees that creates a deep green canopy. In the fifteenth century, the Nuremberg patrician family Haller von Hallerstein acquired this riverside meadow for recreation. While the city walls nearby were built for defense, this area remained a designated space for leisure. Albrecht Dürer captured this exact stretch in his watercolors, showing the meadow as a quiet escape from city life.
