Széchenyi István tér is the wide, open square anchored by the Academy of Sciences building and the western end of the Chain Bridge. It served as a busy commercial center during the nineteenth century, when goods arriving by boat on the Danube were hauled up to the city markets. Count István Széchenyi, the man who championed the bridge's construction, insisted on building the Academy here so the nation’s intellectual heart would sit right at the gateway to Pest.
