The Catedral-Basílica de Santa María de Mallorca dominates the Palma skyline with a wall of golden sandstone and flying buttresses that reach toward the sea. King James the First ordered its construction on the site of a former mosque after his fleet survived a deadly storm at sea to capture the island in twelve twenty-nine. Centuries later, architect Antoni Gaudí arrived to renovate the interior, hanging a massive crown of thorns over the altar and moving the choir stalls to open the central nave.
